Made-to-Measure Set-in Sleeve Cardigan – Kim McBrien Evans
Skill Expectations for this Workshop:
– Has knit a minimum of 3 adult sweaters
– Basic knitting skills: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, increase/decrease
– Can recognize a set-in sleeve sweater
Duration: 6 hours (90 minutes for lunch) | Capacity: 25
Location: Level 2 – Ash Room
Homework to be completed before Workshop:
- Knit a gauge swatch in the yarn you wish to use for this cardigan.
- Recommended yarn weights: Fingering, sport or DK
- Recommend yarn amounts: You can use any yarn you wish, as long as it’s fingering, sport or DK weight. Information will be forwarded with all details upon purchasing your workshop ticket. If you would like to use the original yarn or have any questions about yarn amounts, please contact Kim at [email protected] and specify that you are attending the PEI Fibre Festival with the name of the workshop.
- Colour options:
1) If you wish to make your cardigan in one colour, 100% of your yarn should be in a single colourway.
2) To make the cardigan striped as shown (wide stripes interspersed with narrow stripes), you will need yarn in the following amounts: C1 & C2: each 40% or 2/5 of the total yardage; C2 – 20% or 1/5 of the total yardage.
Swatch instructions for Fingering (Sport, DK) weight yarn:
- Cast on a minimum of 55 (50, 45) sts.
- Work in Stockinette (RS: knit; WS: purl) until your swatch is taller than it is wide.
- BO all sts.
Measure your unwashed swatch as follows:
- Measure your swatch in a minimum of 3-4 places, in 10 cm (4 in) sections. Write down all your gauge measurements and label them as “knitting gauge – unwashed” and bring them to class.
- Wash/block your swatch by washing it in warm water and wool wash for a minimum of 20 minutes. Squeeze (do NOT wring!) the water out and lay your swatch flat to dry.
- When dry, measure your washed swatch again, as per the instructions above. Label these measurements as “blocked gauge” and bring them to class.
Students must supply these materials:
- Measuring tape long enough to go around your largest body circumference
- Please wear a light layer such as a t-shirt or tank top for taking measurements
- Pencil
- Calculator – your phone or tablet calculator is fine. If your calculator includes scientific functions, that will be helpful, but not required.
- Your swatch
- Your gauge calculations
