Gone Fishin’ (with wool & wire) – Charlene & Debbie Miller

Create a truly unique piece of fibre art in this playful and hands-on workshop featuring a hooked fish head and tail paired with a welded metal skeleton spine. This class is suitable for beginners and experienced hookers alike. Beginners will gain confidence with basic techniques, while advanced hookers will enjoy the freedom to experiment with creative stitches, bold colour choices, and mixed fibres.

Duration: 6 hours | Capacity: 15
Location: Level 2 – Birch Room

  • Fish skeleton rug hooking kit (head, tail, and welded metal spine)
  • Linen
  • Backing fabric
  • Wool strips, yarns, and specialty fibres
  • Stuffing materials
  • Use of frames, hooks, and tools during class
  • Step-by-step instruction and plenty of encouragement
  • Traditional rug hooking fundamentals
  • Combining fine and wide cuts for texture
  • Finishing with sewing or glue (your choice!)

This class blends traditional rug hooking with mixed media techniques, resulting in a bold, whimsical wall piece that’s full of texture, colour, and personality.

Participants will hook the fish head and tail using colourful wools, yarns, and alternative fibres, then learn how to finish, stuff, and assemble the piece onto a metal fish-bone backbone. A small amount of simple sewing is involved (or a glue alternative for those who prefer), and guidance will be provided every step of the way.

Best of all — just bring yourself. All materials are included, and the tools required to complete the project will be available for use during the class.

  • How to hook a dimensional fish head and tail
  • Working with mixed materials: wool, yarns, sari silk, and novelty fibres
  • Directional hooking for flow and motion
  • Simple finishing techniques, including backing, stuffing, and edge treatment
  • Basic assembly methods to attach hooked pieces to a metal structure
  • Tips for mounting and displaying your finished fish art
