Distinctive Wool: The Fiber Characteristics of Rare, Heritage and Sheep Breeds – Cabin Boy Knits

Duration: 1.5 hours Capacity: 90
Location: Level 1 – Summerside & Tignish Rooms

This talk explores the unique wool qualities of sheep breeds and how those characteristics shape the yarns we use today. From the fine, crimpy fleeces of Shetland sheep to the lustrous longwool of Cotswold sheep, the double-coated resilience of Soay sheep, and the durable, low-twist strength of Navajo-Churro sheep, we will examine how staple length, crimp, micron count, and luster define the finished textiles.

Focusing on practical yarn use, the talk highlights which breeds excel in soft knitting yarns, outerwear, or rug making — while also considering why preserving these distinctive fleeces matters for biodiversity, sustainability, and textile tradition.

The Cabin Boy Knit guys will bring wool samples, wit and knowledge for an entertaining discussion.
