Visible (or not) Mending for Knitters – Gillian Noonan
Skill Expectations for this Workshop:
Be able to work with handsewing needles and varying weights of wool and thread.

Location: Level 1 – Charlottetown Room
Homework to be completed before Workshop:
- Knit 2 swatches with double knitting weight yarn: Swatches should be constructed as follows: Cast on 30 stitches. Knit 4 rows garter stitch. Knit 34 rows stocking stitch. Knit 4 rows garter stitch. Cast off. Block. (For my swatch, my stocking stitch section is right side knit, reverse side knit3 purl 28 knit3) My blocked swat is 6″w x 6.5″h. Yours should be similar in size.
Students must supply these materials:
- Scissors
- Needles – Chenille size 18 or 20, Tapestry size 18 or 20.
- Small amounts of fingering or dk wool (preferably plied in complementary or contrasting colours to your swatches).
In this class, you will learn techniques to mend your knit garments. While we will focus on handknits, these techniques can be applied to machine knit fabric. We will start with Swiss darning before exploring woven darning and other useful, decorative techniques.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- Repair small holes with woven darning
- Repair thinning areas with Swiss darning
- Use decorative stitches to repair small holes and stains
