Mosaic Knitting 101 – Tanis Gray

The easy going cousin of stranded colourwork, slip-stitch knitting is a fun and easy technique that brings more colour into your work without the stranding or trapping of floats. We’ll knit up the Bow Tie Pasta Fingerless Mitts pattern, discuss the different types of colourwork, how to read charts, mattress stitching, basic colour theory, and finishing techniques.


  • With MC and US 3 (3.25) needles, Longtail CO 50 sts. Do not join into rnd – mitts are worked flat back and fourth in rows.
  • Knit 6 rows.

Attendees to Bring:

  • 2 Highly contrasting shades of DK weight yarn (yarn used is Emma’s Yarn Simply Spectacular DK)
  • Size US 3 (3.25mm) 16” circular knitting needles
  • Size US 5 (3.75mm) 16” circular knitting needles
  • Stitch Markers
  • Sticky Notes
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Wonder Clips or small black office binder clips
