Magic Loop Mittens – Cynthia Hyslop and Barb Barone

Learn to knit in the round on a small circumference using only one circular needle. This clever technique means you’ll never drop a needle (perfect for travel knitting). We’ll introduce you to this technique using a small and practical project: mittens. Using a Yarniversity mitten pattern, we’ll cast on a worsted weight mitten and show you how to join for working in the round (avoiding twists), manage the cord, use stitch markers, and work increases for a thumb gusset. We’ll demonstrate how to remove the thumb stitches and put them on waste yarn, how to cast on in the middle of your work at the back of the thumb and how to pick up stitches behind the thumb to avoid holes. Our Magic Loop Mitten pattern includes 8 sizes of mitten, ranging from toddler to a large adult hand size. In class, we’ll work on the smallest size of mitten.

Skills Required:

Participants can confidently cast on and work knit and purl stitches. If you’ve never “worked in the round” before, or want to try an alternative to double pointed needles, this is the class for you.

Attendees to Bring:

  • Yarn: approximately 60m of a worsted/aran weight yarn in a solid, light colour. Our samples used Rowan Pure Wool in 149 Navy, 124 Rich Red, 112 Moonstone, 190 Raisin and Rowan Kid Classic in 828 Feather.
  • Needles: 3.75mm / US 5 and 4.0mm / US 6 circular knitting needles, 80cm / 32in long.
  • Notions: a few locking stitch markers, a tapestry needle and a short length (30cm / 12in) of a smooth waste yarn in a fingering weight.

Tickets are non-refundable except in limited circumstances as described in the Purchase Policy.
